Marcello Mastroianni’s Princ Leo is the bored, exiled heir to the throne of an unnamed country, now living on the outskirts of a London ghetto with his mistress Margaret (Billie Whitelaw) in John Boorman’s dramatic comedy. While bird-watching he witnesses, and is stirred from his emotional detachment by, the adversity faced by his black neighbours. Touched by the plight of Glenda Foster Jones’ poverty-stricken teenager, the prince takes steps that surprise not just his royal entourage, but himself.
