Critically acclaimed director Robert Altman (Gosford Park, MASH) translates Arthur Kopit’s play Indians for the big screen in vociferous fashion. Paul Newman plays William F. Cody, aka Buffalo Bill, the ostentatious showman of the Wild West. Bill hires Native American figurehead Chief Sitting Bull, with the intent to exploit him and bolster his show’s rhetoric that the noble white man overcame the bloodthirsty savages in the fight for the West. Chief Sitting Bull’s stoic resilience, however, sullies the show’s credibility and flips the portrayal on its head. Drawing comparisons to Altman’ previous work MASH, Buffalo Bill and the Indians is a classic example of a revisionist Western.
