• 1979
  • Directed by: Alan Clarke
  • Cast: Ray Winstone, Mick Ford, Julian Firth

Director Clarke's cinematic remake of his banned 1977 TV film is one of the most uncompromising prison movies ever made, with Winstone outstanding as the young punk who begins by just wanting to get through his time in Borstal only to find that the system won't let him. Ford and Firth are excellent. The 1977 original is marginally rawer and more frightening, but this is still Clarke's best feature film.
