Bresson's final film is an unsentimental tale about how evil spreads: when a well-to-do teenager is denied extra pocket money, he passes a forged bank note which ends up in the hands of oil company engineer Yvon, who doesn't realise it's fake. The resulting trouble wrecks more than one life, climaxing in a scene of chilling violence. Mordantly told, crisply shot and a fitting end to one of the great cinema careers.
