A Nightmare on Elm Street
- 91 min
- Directed by: Wes Craven
- Cast: Robert Englund, Johnny Depp, Heather Langenkamp
Perhaps the quintessential teenage slasher flick, A Nightmare on Elm Street obliterates the distinction between fantasy and reality. Nancy (Langenkamp) and her friends Glen (Depp), Tina (Amanda Wyss) and Rod (Nick Corri), discover they’re all being stalked in their dreams by the grotesque psychopath Freddie Krueger. As Krueger begins to systematically target each of them, the teens must stay awake for long enough to formulate a plan to stop him, or become mincemeat at the hand of his notorious razor-blade glove…
Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) is having nightmares. Something in her haunted sleep wants to kill her. But Nancy has more to fear than her nightmare. Her high school friends, she discovers, are having the same fiendish night terror, and they are being murdered – systematically slaughtered in their sleep by the predatory monster of their shared nightmare. Nancy prepares to traverse into the hellish realm of nightmares to wage her own extraordinary battle with the ghastly killer, a scarred man with a stripy sweater and a blade-covered glove. There, she confronts the dark, decade-old secret of the real nightmare on Elm Street.
Without a doubt, Freddy Krueger was the horror movie icon of the eighties. Pairing Wes Craven’s imaginative script and pin-short direction with Robert Englund’s portrayal of Krueger, *A Nightmare on Elm Street *spawned six sequels, a TV series and a remake. The original, however, is still our favourite - and the best.
