Scientist Peyton Westlake (Neeson) develops a synthetic skin for help burn victims, but when thugs disfigure him and he's left with no sense of physical pain he becomes Darkman, a more than slightly unhinged vigilante. Raimi's first studio feature weathered a lengthy script development and ended up surprisingly decent: Neeson, carrying a Hollywood movie for the first time, brings an effective, desperate edge, McDormand does her considerable best as the underwritten love interest and it's all fuelled by Raimi's signature grim humour.
