Scarred by her mother’s rape and murder at the hands of her father, 21 year old Lea (Lenka Vlásaková) remains almost mute for the rest of her life. Furniture restorer Herbert (Christian Redl) falls for this damaged young creature, thirty years his junior, who bears a remarkable resemblance to his deceased wife. They marry, and though her union to the controlling Herbert seems hopeless from the start, Lea begins to realise they are bound by a profound spiritual relationship in Ivan Fíla’s Czech drama.
