Suave European academic Humbert (Irons) has a thing for adolescent girls, which goes very wrong when he meets blithe American teenager Dolores (Swain). Lyne's adaptation is far better than Kubrick's overrated 1962 version, acquiring real tragic force as Humbert slowly realises the extent of the harm he's caused. Swain is excellent as the unexpectedly resourceful Lolita and Irons manages to be both monstrous and pathetic.
