Based on the historical event of the giraffe given to Charles X of France by Muhammad Ali of Egypt, this French animation tells the story of the friendship between ten-year-old boy Maki (Max Renandin Pratt) who escapes from slave traders, and Zarafa, an orphaned giraffe he meets on his travels. When his hoofed companion is captured by a trader who intends to present him as a gift to the French monarch, Maki stubbornly follows along on the adventure to protect his new friend from harm.
