Epic, two-part Bollywood gangster movie, with part one chronicling the rise of crime patriarch Sardar Khan (Bajpayee) as he gains control of Wasseypur. Kashyap's saga clearly owes much to Coppola's Godfather trilogy, but it has its own intensity and energy, and the complex story is well-acted and lightning-paced.

Acclaimed as India’s The Godfather, Gangs of Wasseypur was one of the discoveries of the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. Director Anurag Kashyap blends the ferocious energy of South Indian action movies with the sweep, scope and richness of a gangster epic by Sergio Leone or Martin Scorsese. A bitter rivalry between two powerful clans unfolds over seven decades of violence, naked ambition and radical social change. Shahid Khan rises to prominence during the coal mining boom of the 1940s. A clash with mine owner Ramadhir Singh sparks a vicious turf war and leaves Shahid’s merciless son with a lust for revenge.
