The A5 stretches almost 300 miles from Marble Arch in London to Holyhead in North Wales. It is one of the main arteries of the United Kingdom and along the way you will find countless stories that reveal the extraordinary lives of ordinary people. Marc Isaacs was looking for subjects who were ‘emblematic of the immigrant experience’ and found them in an aspiring singer from Ireland, a trainee Buddhist monk from Burma, an Indian hotel concierge patiently negotiating the visa minefield, an elderly Viennese Jew and a blearyeyed Irish workman lost in a fog of alcohol and regrets. Every step on the road is a journey into someone’s life and the cumulative effect is deeply moving.
