There is nobody quite like Tomi Ungerer. His remarkable career as an illustrator and author spans decades and continents. The acerbic wit and unique style of his art tested the boundaries of acceptability while pleasing mainstream audiences. Far Out isn’t Far Enough traces Ungerer’s life from his childhood in Nazi-occupied Alsace through to popularity in 1950s New York, with parallel careers as a children’s author and an illustrator of more adult-targeted fare. Featuring fresh interviews with the likes of Where the Wild Things Are author Maurice Sendak and mixing traditional footage with animation, Ungerer’s tale is revealing, engaging and amusing in equal measure.
