This is a delicately composed, beautifully textured portrait of groundbreaking artist and kick-ass feminist Carolee Schneemann. The New York-based artist is a pioneer of performance art and avant-garde cinema, whose work has transformed discourses on the body, sexuality and gender since the 1960s. Deftly weaving footage from some of Schneemann’s most seminal works including performances Meat Joy and Interior Scroll, as well as Fuses, her honestly explicit film of lovemaking shot from the female perspective, with contemporary shots of her journals, paintings and home life, the film captures the multi-dimensionality and intimate nature of the artist’s practice. Schneemann is disarmingly funny and open as she generously shares her memories and extraordinary personal archive in this mesmerising film.
