A beautiful mixed-race girl turns heads on an ocean liner and leads her magician lover to a deadly revenge.

Exotic, ocean-going tragedy in one of the most mysterious, sultry and sombre tales ever made in France. The elegant art deco interiors, the menacing use of sound, the fascinating and enigmatic racial politics, combine to make a rich and strange work, transfiguring conventional melodrama into something almost supernatural. Studio interference has left the plot truncated, but that seems to add to the film’s mystique and hypnotic power.
