Gremillon’s first masterpiece: a bargee inherits the family estate, but yearns for freedom.
Misanthropic Maldone works the canals, falls for a gypsy woman, but then comes into his inheritance. Upon this slender story, Gremillon crafts a unique visual experience, hallucinatory in its intensity. Changing style with each location, the movie presents unforgettable imagery: the feverish summer brightness of the canal scenes, the languid art deco casino, the dervish frenzy of the dance floor. The result is a classic of screen poetry.
