Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the illegitimate daughter of a Royal Navy officer, is placed in the custody of his uncle (Tom Wilkinson), an aristocrat and Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales. She grows up in Kenwood House, but feels that her status is affected by her gender and the colour of her skin.
