Sea of Trees

  • 2015
  • US
  • Directed by: Gus Van Sant
  • Written by: Chris Sparling
  • Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Naomi Watts, Ken Watanabe

Arthur (McConaughey) travels to a suicide hotspot in Japan with the intent of taking his own life, when he meets Takumi (Watanabe) and the two get embroiled in a struggle to survive. A soft-hearted, melodramatic muddle of a film; McConaughey is compellingly committed and it's beautifully crafted, but sentimental and platitudinous.
