Raimund (Irons) is a lonely lecturer travelling to Lisbon to track down a girl he persuaded not to commit suicide, in the course of which he interviews various people. August's latest film is an unfashionable, historically aware melodrama with a deliberately unglamorous central performance, and despite strange casting choices it at least reasserts its director's ability.
