Aidan (Braff), an unemployed actor, shuffles around Santa Monica between dying father Gabe (Patinkin), shiftless brother Noah (Gad) and frustrated wife Sarah (Hudson). Writer/director Braff's follow-up to Garden State lacks that film's self-aware humility, and despite a realistic milieu of school fees and expensive healthcare it plays out as self-pitying Hollywood schmaltz.
