Kolya (Serebryakov) has a beautiful wife (Lyadova), a healthy son (Pokhodaev) and a fine home, but he soon has to content with threats to them all. Despite heart-tugging content and a solemn emotional climate, it's an oddly uplifting tale, thanks to Zvvagintsev's ability to infuse his storytelling with small mysteries and surprises. A film of classic sweep and sharp relevance.
