Grigori (Cassel) presides over a closed community of women and children, but his authority is threatened when one of the children, Alexander (Chabriel), starts to develop his own sense of right and wrong. Fine performances from Cassel and skilful newcomer Chabriel are let down by Kleiman's insistence on atmosphere and mystery rather than satisfying storytelling.
