In Focus: Un Homme Qui Dort With Live Rescore By Animat
This film is not currently showing in cinemas.
We launch our second In Focus Season of films with this screening of the 1974 'Un Home Qui Dort' accompanied by a live rescore by Animat.
'A hypnotic solo by its mute hero, a young man who decides to withdraw from the world and whose mental journal of his experience is confided to us by a girl's voice off-screen, Un Homme qui Dort is an astonishing tour de force. What distinguishes it from all those ventures in spiritual navel-gazing is that his decision to not-be is purely practical, and the parabola he traces from boredom to terror - as he gradually detaches himself to float free within an indefinable menace - is brilliantly conveyed by the other leading character in the film: the city of Paris' (Time Out)
Based on a novel by Georges Perec, the Jean Vigo prizewinning Un Homme Qui Dort turns its back on conventional narrative or dialogue, instead telling its story through voiceover and inventive black and white cinematography.
Animat have composed and produced a new soundtrack which uses elements from the original narration (in both English and French) and creates a hypnotic, ambient electronic soundscape that fits perfectly with the pace and mood of the film.
Sheffield based musicians, producers and DJs Mark Daly and Michael Harding have been working together as Animat since 2005. Over the last decade they have released albums on the Big Chill, Mareld and Bloodsugar labels, as well as appearing on numerous compilations. They have worked with guest vocalists including Sanchita Farruque (Nitin Sawhney, Trilok Gurtu), Anne Garner and Lisa Palmer, remixed tracks for acts including Pitch Black, Banco de Gaia and Deep Dive Corp, and had music used in multimedia projects at Tate Britain and New York’s Leverhouse Gallery.
They have established a national reputation in the UK for their unique live soundtracking events, performing live at cinemas, festivals and other venues across the country with cult films including Dark Star (John Carpenter), Belleville Rendezvous (Sylvain Chomet), and The Straight Story (David Lynch).

What the press have said about Animat:
***Belleville Rendezvous****: 'Sylvain Chomet’s award-winning animated movie brought to life by Animat’s suitably imaginative soundtrack' (****The Guardian****)*
****The Straight Story****: 'A unique live reworking of this most unusual of road movies' (****Sheffield Telegraph)***
****The Last Man On Earth: ****'So beautifully judged that, like Vincent Price in the lead, it's hard to imagine the film without it' (****Twitch****)*
****Dark Star****: 'In several ways, Dark Star emerges a better film with Animat's new score…..The result creates a whole new experience, at once deferential without ever becoming fawning. Animat have perfectly captured the tone Carpenter was going for, making this a must-see for fans of the film and newcomers alike' (****dsoaudio.com****)*
