All'opera: Coppelia - Live From Teatro Alla Scala
This 19th century classic is an enchanting tale about a mechanical doll made by the toy-maker Dr. Coppelius. The doll is so life-like that some believe she is his daughter and the mistake leads to intrigue and jealousy in love. Seduced by the disturbing and dramatic atmospheres of Hoffmann’s tale, Mauro Bigonzetti interprets the rich score by Delibes as a web of illusion, deception, reality and memories, coupled with confusion and ambiguity from the eyes and gazes of the performers that will perplex audiences towards a point of no return.
It has been seven years since the previous creation of Coppélia and in this production, key characters will emerge from the pages of the tale through the music: the scientist Spallanzani, the optician Coppola, Nataniele and his obsession, his ancée Clara and Olimpia, the lynchpin of the affair and the choreographic inspiration for the unparalleled charm of breathing life, movement and pace into an automaton that comes to life. The same artistic team behind Cinderella, the opening title of last season which won Bigonzetti, the candidature for the prestigious Benois de la Danse award, the new Coppélia, interpreted for the dancers of La Scala, will feature their own star Roberto Bolle in the opening performances and Patrick Fournillier, a specialist in the romantic repertoire will grace the podium.
