Welcome to 'Dog Days', Austrian director Seidl's vision of suburban hell on a sweltering summer weekend. Aiming for authenticity and intimacy, the director follows his lonely characters (played mainly by non-professionals) into bathrooms and sex parlours, where the camera observes their sagging, protuberant flesh. Absent, however, is any real feeling of compassion towards these forlorn individuals. And the painfully protracted torture scene suggests that Seidl himself relishes depicting his character's (and cast's?) discomfort.
