From an Edith Wharton novel set in the Civil War era, Davis plays Charlotte Lovell, who has an illegitimate child with a man who is in love with her cousin Delia (Hopkins). Delia ditches him to marry for money, but when he dies in the war, and she finds out about the child, she ruins Charlotte's chance for a good match and adopts the child herself.
