Based on the true story of the 1973 tennis match between unrepentant male chauvinist ex-no. 1 Bobby Riggs (Carell) and Wimbledon champion Billie Jean King (Stone). An irresistible story, with Carell finding the outrageous and the sad within Riggs, and Stone’s warm and forceful performance winning the film.

Battle of the Sexes (12A)

This biopic of tennis star Billie Jean King, played by Emma Stone focuses after King’s triumphant win at the 1972 US Open.

Here she finds that a new prize fund has been introduced offering women eight times less than the men. Her opposition brings out the misogynist ex-pro Bobby Rigg (Steve Carell), who challenges her to an exhibition match to prove finally, in his eyes, who is the better sex!

The film also explores King’s marriage and her burgeoning same-sex relationship with her hairdresser, played by the ever-reliable Andrea Riseborough. Great performances and well-choreographed tennis sequences land just inside the line in this impressive biopic.
